BLACK+DECKER 36 V Lithium-Ion Strimmer with 2.0 Ah Battery

Black and Decker are regarded for their high-quality power tools and this 36V cordless strimmer is no exception. Easily one of the best cordless strimmers on the market, this model comes with an impressive 36V electric motor that makes it suitable for those larger lawns too – something not all cordless strimmers can do.

Utilising Black and Decker’s E-drive technology, the strimmer also has a much higher toque to help provide power to cut through thick growth with greater ease. If you need to cut through anything thick or wet, simply switch to turbo mode and the strimmer can make short work of it.

However, this does drain the 2Ah battery much quicker than normal, so this model probably isn’t the best suited for constantly strimming tougher growth. Using eco mode helps to significantly increase battery life and will be more than enough for most typical strimming needs.

Other noteworthy features include an impressive 3.5kg weight for easy handling and less fatigue, while the automatic spool feed system ensures little time is wasted trying to feed the spool through!

While traditionally known as a vehicle manufacturer, Hyundai are also regarded for producing premium quality petrol lawn mowers and strimmers, such as this impressive 4-stroke strimmer that is a great investment for large gardens with lots of maintenance requirements.

Powered by a robust 26-cc 4-stroke engine, this strimmer has more than enough juice to cut through even the toughest of garden growth, including long and damp grass. Better still, the engine doesn’t require 2-stroke oil, which can be a pain, especially if you have to mix yourself, instead running on straight unleaded petrol where you can buy anywhere.

At 5kg it isn’t the heaviest petrol strimmer yet it is still quite heavy for many people to operate. Thankfully, a comfort harness is included with the strimmer to help balance the weight out and make operating much easier, while the comfort padding on the handle reduces fatigue from vibrations.

Other useful features include a split shaft design for easier storage and transportation, while the tap and go spool feed only needs a quick bump on the ground to feed new spool, saving the hassle of manually feeding.

Mcculloch TRIMMAC Petrol Grass Trimmer, 25 cc, Cutting Width 40 cm

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly petrol strimmer then the McCulloch TRIMMAC is well worth consideration. Weighing just 3.9kg – very lightweight for a petrol strimmer – and boasting a powerful 25cc 2-stroke engine, the TRIMMAC is suitable for almost all types of strimming maintenance.

Ease of use isn’t always present with a petrol strimmer yet the TRIMMAC makes strimming with a more robust machine much easier. From the lightweight design to the adjustable padded handle, it’s easier to use the TRIMMAC than most other types of petrol strimmers.

This means you benefit from the impressive cutting power without constantly feeling fatigued when using it. A 40cm cutting width also helps make strimming easier, which is what the entire TRIMMAC design is based around.

The only real issue is the fact it requires 2-stroke fuel, which needs to be mixed yourself, although McCulloch does sell a pre-mixed solution that removes the hassle of making it yourself.

Bosch ART 24 Electric Grass Trimmer

Bosch ART 24 Electric Grass Trimmer, Cutting Diameter 24 cm
Bosch ART 24 Electric Grass Trimmer, Cutting Diameter 24 cm
Bosch ART 24 Electric Grass Trimmer, Cutting Diameter 24 cm

Cheap, easy to operate, and powerful for most small lawn maintenance, the Bosch ART 24 Electric Grass Trimmer offers exceptional value for money. Granted, it’s not the best for larger gardens or areas that have lots of thick growth and weeds, but for smaller gardens you really cannot find a better strimmer.

The 400W power is more than enough for stadanrd trimming and edging around the lawn. It is corded so may not have the best reach for larger spaces, while the cutting power isn’t designed to handle wet or overgrown grass.

A great feature is the rotating cutter head, which lets you seamlessly switch from edging and trimming in a single button. It makes maintenance so much easier, as you just hit the button according to the area and let the strimmer get to work.

Sporting an ergonomic design and incredibly lightweight build of just 2.5kg, using this around the garden shouldn’t be a struggle. You can even adjust the telescopic handle to various lengths to help avoid any unnecessary strains on the back and shoulder.

The automatic twin line system also means you won’t need to spend much – if any – time cutting the line!

Buying Guide

If you want a perfectly manicured lawn in your garden then investing in a strimmer is worthwhile. Affordable and easy to use, garden strimmers offer a simple and effective way to compliment the use of your best lawnmower and trim those more difficult areas of the lawn. From trimming around flower beds and trees to creating the perfect lawn border, the best garden strimmers make lawn maintenance quick and easy.

Types of Garden Strimmer

The concept of a garden strimmer has remained virtually unchanged since its inception – a handheld shaft with a motor to power a spool of string at the end which cuts away grass and weeds, although there are strimmer that use blades not line. Designs and power sources do vary in garden strimmers however, with each one being suitable for different types of lawns and maintenance requirements.

Electric Strimmer

The most widely available garden strimmer, electric strimmers are powered by an electric motor that produces great cutting power. While very affordable and lightweight for easier handling, electric strimmers are often limited in larger gardens due to a corded design that requires them to be plugged in.

Cordless Strimmer

Cordless  strimmers are electric strimmers powered by a battery. This means they don’t need to be plugged into a power source, making them much easier to manoeuvre around the garden. Ideal for large gardens or areas that are difficult to reach with a traditional electric strimmer, cordless strimmers do have a limited run time due being battery powered and aren’t as powering as other types.

Petrol Strimmer

Unlike other types of strimmers a petrol strimmer is powered by a petrol motor that results in some serious cutting power. Easily the most powerful types of strimmers, petrol strimmers are great for those larger and tougher lawns, making short work of thick growth, weeds, and even wet grass. Many of these models come in the form of a garden multi tool which have various attachments for different gardening tasks.

Petrol strimmers are also cordless but do weigh much more than electric strimmers, so may not be suited for people that may struggle to handle a heavier strimmer throughout the garden. Furthermore, they tend to be the most expensive type while their noise and emissions may be off-putting for some.

Choosing the Right Garden Strimmer

Every garden has different needs when it comes to a strimmer. For instance, small lawns that only need borders tidied with a strimmer won’t need the same device as a large lawn with thick growth and lots of weeds.

So, it’s important to think about what you need from a strimmer to ensure you get something suitable for your garden!

Lawn Size

Perhaps the most obvious consideration to make before buying a strimmer is the size of your lawn. Small lawns that are a short distance from your home probably won’t need anything too powerful or a cordless design, meaning an electric strimmer is likely the best option.

If you have a larger lawn or one that is generally filled with tough grass and weed growth then a petrol strimmer will have the necessary power to adequately maintain the lawn. If you require lots of edging work to be done around borders and beds, then cordless options are a great option for manoeuvring around the entire garden.

Cutting Width

There is a simple rule when it comes to the cutting width of a garden strimmer – the larger the width the more can be cut in a single pass. So, if you have a lot of strimming needs throughout the garden then a larger cutting with will make life much easier, requiring fewer passes as you go.

Smaller cutting widths aren’t necessarily a bad thing however, as they can be ideal for more precising strimming, such as around a flower bed or compact areas in the garden.

Fixed or Rotating Head

There are two types of strimmer heads – fixed and rotating. Fixed heads are usually found on cheaper models and don’t offer the same flexibility as rotating heads, although this feature isn’t always needed. If you want a perfectly cut lawn with precise edging throughout, then a rotating head may be worth the additional investment as it makes manoeuvring the strimmer much easier.

Battery

If you’re thinking of getting a cordless strimmer always consider the batter quality before you buy. While very convenient, a cordless strimmer battery can take several hours to recharge, which is certainly less convenient when it occurs mid-strim.

Check the Amp hour (Ah) rating to see how long the run time is – the longer the Ah the more run time it has. Also, the size of the batter will determine its overall cutting power. 12V batteries are suitable for most small gardens, while 36V and above are recommended for larger gardens.

Comfort

Strimming for long periods quickly leads to fatigue setting in, so make sure to look at any comfort features to ensure you don’t tire quickly when trimming. For instance, a comfort grip that absorbs the vibrations of the motor may help reduce hand fatigue, with extendable shafts are a good idea for reducing back aches.

Also, lighter models especially electric and cordless types, are much comfier to operate thanks to their reduced weight. Petrol powered strimmers are often quite tiring to use – even more so in larger gardens!
