Garden strimmers are a great tool for lawn maintenance, especially in gardens with irregularly shaped lawns that are difficult to cut using a lawnmower.

The best cordless strimmer can easily navigate around tight bends and near objects like fencing and walls without taking any damage, making them a great garden tool to have in the shed.

Better still, cordless strimmers offer even better manoeuvrability than corded strimmers, as there is no power cord that might get caught up in something in the garden or restrict how far you can take the strimmer.

Cordless strimmers have come a long way in recent years thanks to improvements in battery technology. Lithium-ion batteries are now much more affordable so can be used in strimmers without driving the cost too high, providing gardeners with a lightweight tool that can be used anywhere outdoors.

Batteries are now capable of providing a long charge that gives the strimmer more than enough time to cut grass. In fact, you can even double up on batteries – which are more affordable than ever – to effectively double the runtime.

Not only that, but batteries can now recharge very quickly, with some recharging in under an hour. This means that there are few drawbacks for using a cordless strimmer – they are a fantastic investment for gardens of every shape and size!

Cordless models make garden maintenance easier than ever. They are suitable for various tasks, such as edging the lawn, cutting longer grass prior to mowing, and reaching hard spots that a lawn mower can’t such as under hedges or along a fence.

As such a versatile gardening tool there is plenty of good reason to invest in a cordless strimmer, especially if you love a well-maintained lawn or own a garden allotment away from your main property! We have field tested may trimmers and below we cover and compare all the top models available for sale in the UK.

BLACK+DECKER 36 V Lithium-Ion Strimmer with 2.0 Ah Battery
BLACK+DECKER 36 V Lithium-Ion Strimmer with 2.0 Ah Battery

This 36V cordless grass strimmer from BLACK + DECKER is a great investment for gardeners that need a versatile strimmer suitable for all kinds of maintenance.

There are two power modes you can easily switch between to suit your streaming needs, including the energy saving ECO mode and the more powerful TURBO mode. The former is suitable for standard strimming and edging while the latter is a good option for longer, tougher growth that needs more power.

Either mode works very well in the right condition, while being able to switch to ECO mode as needed helps to maximise the battery life. If you use it entirely in TURBO mode the battery will drain very quickly, although it does recharge in no time at all.

At full power the strimmer reaches an impressive 8500rpms, which is certainly enough to cut away long and overgrown areas, while also making the strimmer a good option for larger gardens. It also has a 30cm cutting swathe which is on the higher end for a strimmer, further highlighting how suitable it is for larger gardens.

Don’t worry about using it for long periods in more spacious gardens though, as the strimmer is very lightweight at just 3.5kg. You should be able to use it for an entire battery charge without feeling the effects!

A telescopic handle means you can easily adjust the length of the strimmer to suit your height, meaning you don’t need to worry about being hunched over and hurting your back and shoulders as you strim! Many owners commented that it was the best cordless strimmer for the money and we would struggle to disagree with that assessment..

Greenworks Tools 2101507 Cordless String Trimmer, 40 V, Green

This 40V cordless strimmer from Greenworks is a lightweight yet powerful gardening tool suitable for medium and large sized lawns.

One of the big selling points of this strimmer is the pivoting head. The head can be adjusted to various angles to suit your strimming needs, making it a fantastic option if you want the perfect lawn edging and have difficult to reach spots such as under trees and bushes.

The 40V motor packs plenty of cutting power despite being incredibly lightweight, so it’s suitable for taking on tougher growth along with more standard strimming. You really do get the best of both with this strimmer – the nylon line can handle precise strimming and chopping away thicker growth.

An auto feed line is included with the strimmer with makes it even easier to use as you the line simply feeds through automatically after breaking. No need to bang on the ground or spend ages manually feeding a line through with this strimmer!

It is worth remembering that batteries and chargers are sold separately. This may seem strange but is down to Greenworks using a universal lithium-ion battery for all their different power tools. For instance, you can use the same batteries in a Greenworks lawn mower or chainsaw as this strimmer.

So, if you already have a Greenworks power tool and battery then you can save a huge amount of money on this strimmer’s. If not, the cost of battery and charger is more in line with other cordless strimmer’s. Our tests found this another excellent option and definitely one to consider.

Bosch are known for producing a range of cordless power tools with impressive performance and the Advanced Grass Cut 36 strimmer continues this trend. Better still, you can interchange the rechargeable batteries with other Bosch Syneon tools, so if you already own this type of tool you can save a good amount of money on a battery.

If not, the battery that powers this strimmer is well worth investing in, with the 36V battery being suitable for many tools you may be interested in buying down the line.

Battery performance is good, lasting around 30 minutes on a full charge and taking about an hour or so to recharge. The battery and strimmer are on the heavier side though, so bear in mind if you need to use it in larger gardens as you may start feeling the fatigue.

However, the added power that the strimmer provides makes the heavier weight worthwhile. Capable of cutting through short and long growth alike, the twin double line nylon spins at high speeds to efficiently remove all kinds of grass.

The cutting head can be adjusted to a vertical position to make for much easier edging, while the automatic line feeder ensures that you won’t need to stop if the line snaps on a rock or bit of fencing.

You can also adjust the length of the strimmer to suit your height and the handle can also be adjusted to various angles to suit your needs. This means the strimmer is comfortable to operate, even if a bit heavy, and the balance remains good no matter the positioning.

Aerotek 40V Cordless Battery Powered Grass Trimmer Machine Only Series X2

The Aerotek 40V strimmer is a lightweight strimmer that packs a surprising punch. Despite being just 2.5kg the strimmer is capable of taking on most types of lawns, whether it’s standard strimming around the edges or removing long grass in a large area.

This lightweight design means that the strimmer is very easy to operate no matter how big your garden is. You can strim for decent length of time – anywhere from 20-40 minutes depending on the battery you use – so strimming in larger areas is certainly possible.

In terms of performance, the strimmer produces a very smooth cut on all types of grass, with the 25cm cutting length making short work of thick and thin grass alike. It uses an auto feed system too, so you don’t need to waste time feeding a fresh line through any time it breaks

There are two power modes you can use with the strimmer. Low speed produces 8000rpms and is suitable for traditional strumming along lawn edges (the cutting head is adjustable to help with this), while the 9500rpms at high speed are suitable for strimming wider areas.

The high-speed mode will drain the battery quicker though so be sure to switch modes as needed! Batteries are sold separately, with 2.0Ah, 2.4Ah, and 3.0Ah batteries available, so you can choose one that is suitable for the size of your lawn.

These batteries can also be used with other Aerotek garden power tools, so bear this in mind if you already own one or are thinking of buying other cordless tools like a hedge trimmer or lawn mower.

WORX WG163E.1 18V 20V MAX Cordless Grass Trimmer with Command Feed

If you have a smaller garden or less strenuous strimming requirements then this cordless strimmer from WORX MAX is worth checking out. Powered by a 20V battery that can be swapped into other WORX power tools, it’s got a good amount of power to strim around the edges of most lawns.

Comfort is at the forefront of this strimmer, with a telescopic handle easily adjusting to the height of the user to avoid any strain. It’s also ridiculously light, weighing just 3.5kg, so most gardeners should be able to use it for an entire battery charge without feeling the effects.

A unique feature with this strimmer is how the adjustable cutting head makes edging even easier. It can be adjusted to a 90-degree angle for precise edging and uses two rear wheels to help provide added stability as you edge along the lawn as a mini lawn mower specifically for edging!

This results in one of the most precise edging from any strimmer! It also has a good size cutting width of 30cm, so it can certainly handle thicker and longer growth if needed. The adjustable head is also useful for mowing tougher terrains, such as on slopes or under bushes and objects.

Another cool feature is the button feed system. Unlike most strimmers that are either bump feed or auto feed, this strimmer comes with a Command Feed button on the handle that lets you feed the line through as you need it.

Our Analysis & Results

We have analysed several factors when rating the above strimmer’s including cutting efficiency, battery life, ease of use and value for money. The overall rating is displayed in the comparison chart below.

Buying Guide

Thinking of buying a cordless strimmer but don’t know what features to look for? With so many options available choosing a garden strimmer isn’t always that easy, especially if you’re unsure what you need for your garden. Hopefully our above reviews and comparisons have at least give you some options to choose from.

To help with the process check out the buying guide below. It outlines various features to look out for and what works best for certain gardens. This should make it easy to find the best cordless strimmer for your needs!

Power

Cordless strimmer power is measured in voltages (V), so the general rule is more voltage the better as it provides even more cutting power. However, not all gardens require the most powerful strimmer possible.

For instance, if you have a small lawn and only want to do some edging then you won’t need too powerful a strimmer. Conversely, larger lawns with dense growth (such as long/wet grass or lots of weeds) may require more cutting power to reduce the time spend strimming. If you wanted a more versatile option you could also consider purchasing a garden multi-tool which as the name suggests has several tools in one package.

20V strimmers are suitable for small gardens, while 36V and 40V strimmers tend to be used in medium and large-sized gardens. The more difficult areas that you have to strim the more power is recommended!

Battery Runtime

Cordless strimmers have a limited runtime due to being powered by a battery so you need to think about how long you will be using it for on average.

Larger gardens require longer runtimes, while small and medium-sized gardens won’t need too long of a runtime, although this depends on how long it takes you to strim and the power setting on the strimmer.

For small maintenance tasks around the lawn and garden, around 20 to 30-minute runtime should be okay. Larger areas will need about an hour worth of runtime, in which case a bigger battery or a secondary battery may be required to increase the runtime.

Fast charging batteries can also help, while you may find certain strimmer batteries are interchangeable with other gardening tools from the same manufacturer.

Weight and Comfort

You’re going to be holding a strimmer for anywhere from 10 minutes to several hours, so it should not be too heavy for you to carry for prolonged periods. Also, it’s worth seeing how comfortable the strimmer is and whether there are features to improve comfort during use.

For example, adjustable shafts are recommended for getting the right length so that it is comfortable to use, while an adjustable handle is also a good idea for working in various positions without overstretching.

Thankfully, most cordless strimmers are lightweight by design, but always be sure to check the weight just in case it’s heavier than you assume. Wider handles offer better balance in heavier models and can increase comfort too, which is very useful when trimming larger areas.

Cutting Head Width

The cutting head determines how much grass you can strim at any time, so the wider the cutting head the more suitable the strimmer is for larger lawns. Sizes of cutting heads vary from each model, with the average being around 30-40cm, which are suitable for most lawn sizes.

Be sure to think about how much strimming you’ll be doing and choose a cutting head that is large enough to accommodate this. If you’re doing lots of strimming or taking on long and wild growth, then a larger cutting head is a good idea.

Cutting Head Movement

It’s a good idea to check to see if the cutting head on the strimmer adjustable.

This a feature found on many strimmers and really helps improve manoeuvrability around edges and hard to reach spots. Some can go vertical and horizontal while others can be moved to various angles – some even have edging functions that include an edger and wheel for the utmost precision.

The more movement a cutting head has the better – you simply move the head around to suit the situation.

Line Feed

A strimmer line is usually a nylon blade that rotates at high speeds to remove the grass and the line can be fed through the strimmer using several line feed systems although there are bladed strimmers, some with plastic attachments and other that use metal blades.

Plastic blades will break eventually, you’re going to need to feed new line frequently, especially when dealing with long grass and edging near stones and other hard materials, so be sure to choose a suitable line feed system.

Bump Feed – Tap the bottom of the strimmer to feed more line. Quick and easy to use and a very common line feed system. Some of our cordless strimmer reviews above have bump feed.

Automatic Feed – Probably the most convenient as it automatically feeds the line as needed, saving a lot of hassle.

Manual Feed – Requires the user to stop the strimmer and manually feed the line through. Not very convenient as it’s time-consuming to feed so should probably be avoided!
